Scientist predicts rise of robots unless…

In a paper published in the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Artificial Intelligence, Steve Omohundro, the renowned artificial intelligence researcher, have predicted the rise of anti-social robots unless the roboticists design, build and program the future autonomous robots carefully.

Autonomous systems are systems, which are designed to plan some of their actions themselves, depending on varying operating conditions. Through the paper titled “Autonomous technology and the greater human good”, Omohundro has tried to tell the readers that an “autonomous system” might have the ability to surprise its designer by doing things that other than being unexpected are also undesirable.

Omohundro, who is known for his studies on social implications of artificial intelligence, has mentioned that economic and military pressures are forcing roboticists to develop autonomous systems and add advanced features in them. Due to this increasing pressure, designers are failing to pay enough attention to undesired and unintended consequences.

For instance, the US Air Force, in 2010, reported that increased use of highly flexible and adaptable autonomous processes and systems can offer time-domain operational advantages that their counterparts served by human decision making and planning could never have offered.

Such reports on “operational advantages” make it mandatory for the system designers to come up with system designs that cannot be supervised by humans due to their incredible computing power.

To conclude, the scientist has predicted that a rational system’s affinity towards replication, self-preservation, efficiency and resource acquisition will eventually lead to dangerous and antisocial behaviors unless countered explicitly. Omohundro has also mentioned that these self-obsessed robots might even fail to serve the purpose they are designed for.
